Social Gender Transition: Respectful Inclusion or Psychological Experiment?

In recent years, school districts across the US have adopted policies to facilitate students' desire not to be treated in accordance with their sex. In many cases, schools facilitate these social transitions without consulting parents. Advocates argue that "trans kids know who they are," that it is a basic sign of respect to use their preferred names and pronouns and to allow them to use the facilities of their choosing, and that schools have to protect students' privacy and safety--even from their own parents. Opponents counter that social transition is a psychological intervention with potential to do harm and that fit parents ought to be involved in these decisions. Since taking office, President Trump has signed executive orders recognizing only two sexes and threatening to deprive school districts of federal funding if they facilitate secret gender transitions.

What does the research tell us about social transition in children and adolescents? What have other countries done and what are the obstacles to enacting common-sense, evidence-based practices in U.S. schools?
