<image:title>Online Resources - Online Classes</image:title>
<image:caption>Outschool. Small group online classes for all ages. Students meet with a live teacher, typically once a week for 1-8 weeks. Anyone can register to teach a class, so it is best to find a teacher through word of mouth. Time4Writing. This is a fantastic resource for teaching writing for grades 2-12. Kids go at their own pace and schedule. There is a combination of videos, multiple-choice quizzes, and freestyle writing assignments. Each assignment has clear expectations and is evaluated by a certified teacher. Each 8 week course teaches grammar and composition. Assignments are cumulative and teach students organize their thoughts into an outline and then an essay. Sometimes, the teacher will ask the child to revise the composition if there are significant issues. Elementary school students should plan on one 8 week course while middle school and high school should take two courses. Cost is $120 per course. Night Zookeeper. Game based creative writing system. Children design a character that will go on an adventure. Grammar and vocabulary are introduced in a fun way, and children are prompted to write free-style text. They get feedback right away from the system - either the computer, or a human that reads the text. Parents also get to see and review assignments. Children can also share their stories with other kids who use Night Zookeeper. Grub Street. Grub Street Books has an amazing young writers program open to students grade 8-12. They offer 1x/month FREE classes across a variety of different writing genres and classes are signed up for on a first come/first serve basis and run on Saturday afternoons. Live classes in Boston as well as online courses. Power School. K-12. Each lesson consists of high-quality videos (the best in-class in my opinion) and multiple choice questions, that are adaptively selected based on your child’s responses. There are optional hands-on assignments that parents/children need to coordinate. Cost is based on how many classes your child takes: $10/month $25/month per child depending on how many classes your child takes. Time4Learning. K-12. Each class consists of videos and multiple choice questions. This is the highest rated full-service website by Cathy Duff. It is the only full-service website that has kids reading full-length books (kids read excerpts on the website to complete assignments, but parents are given the list of books in case they want to buy them). Parents need to grade free-style essays themselves. Costs $20/month for K-8 and $30/month for 9-12. There are two sister websites time4writing.com teaches writing skills and has a certified teacher give feedback on your child’s work. Study.com. 3-12 + college. Each class consists of videos and multiple choice questions. There are suggestions for hands-on science assignments. Students get 24/7 access to instructors to ask for help with assignments. Costs $60/month. IXL. K-12. Each class consists of videos and multiple choice questions that are adaptively chosen based on prior response. Cost is $10-$20 per month per child depending on how many classes your child takes. Tikvah Fund. Seminars for 7-12 that combine classical western literature with traditional rabbinic teachings.</image:caption>

<image:title>Summer Reading - 12 Labors of Heracles (Hercules)</image:title>
<image:caption>Heracles is the greatest of all the Greek heroes. He must perform 12 tasks to atone for a terrible crime he commits in a moment of anger. Heracles must slay monsters, capture magical creatures, and even clean out the Universe’s filthiest horse stable. Combined, these are known as the 12 Labors of Heracles. The adversaries he faces appear in movies and stories to this day. The many headed Hydra, the three headed Cerberus, the Amazons - all these are familiar to any lover of modern superheroes. Beneath the thrilling adventures, lies a somber mediation on the nature of repentance. How do you atone for a deed that cannot be undone? How can you attain forgiveness when you cannot even forgive yourself? Get it. We recommend D’Aulaires’ Book of Greek Myths. Ingrid and Edgar d’Aulaire’s retelling has inspired generations of writers since 1962. Going Deeper. The 12 Labors of Heracles have historically been compared to 12 steps of repentance. Each monster or challenge represents an aspect of himself that Heracles must overcome to fully atone for what he did. The story really does not make sense otherwise. Part 1: Heracles commits an unspeakable crime. Part 2: Heracles slays some monsters and steals some treasure. Part 3: Heracles becomes the greatest hero the Greeks have ever known. Part 2 must contain a serious psychological transformation for Part 3 to make any sense. What parents should know. Greek myths have teeth, and the legend of Heracles is no exception. The story begins when our hero murders his family. Though the d’Aulaires have softened some of the harsh edges of Greek myths (e.g. Zeus takes many “brides”), the blood, the violence, and the cannibalism is still there.</image:caption>

<image:title>Summer Reading - Monkey King: Journey to the West</image:title>
<image:caption>Meet Sun Wukong, the Monkey King and one of the most memorable heroes of world literature. He is a trickster, a shapeshifter, a warrior, and a magician. Most importantly, Sun Wukong represents the spirit of independence inside every human being. Wu Cheng’en wrote his masterpiece in 16th century China. He weaves Chinese and Indian folktales into a non-stop adventure around a historical pilgrimage to fetch Buddhist scrolls from India. Older readers will appreciate the spiritual insight and biting satire on Chinese bureaucracy. Younger readers will love the adventures and the indomitable spirit of the Monkey King. Get it. We recommend the Julia Lovell translation for its accessibility. Amazon has a free sample of chapter 1. Going deeper. The Monkey King is a collection of folk tales. Every adventure or vignette contains a lesson. Pause when you come to the end of a chapter and think about what the purpose of this story is. What lesson did the Monkey King learn? Can you relate this to a situation in your real life? For example, in my favorite adventure, the Monkey King was assigned a very lowly job but with an important sounding title. What parents should know. The Monkey King is an adventure with teeth. Wu Cheng’en does not shy away from describing terrible battles, tortures, and punishments. Besides his magical staff and super strength, Sun Wukong often defeats his enemies in true simian fashion: he urinates on them. This book is appropriate for older elementary students and up.</image:caption>

<image:title>Summer Reading - The Call of the Wild</image:title>
<image:caption>Buck is kidnapped and must work as a sled dog in Yukon, Canada during the 1890’s Klondike Gold Rush. Life for a sled dog during the goldrush is brutal, and Buck must fight to survive. This is a story of courage, loyalty, love, and ferocity. Buck’s indomitable spirit overcome every danger but one….the call of the wild. Jack London asks what happens when you must repeatedly tap into your fiercest instincts just to survive. Get it. We suggest the Penguin Classics version with White Fang and other stories. Going deeper. Friedrich Nietzsche famously said: Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you. Buck’s incredible drive to survive makes many of his decisions seem inevitable. But they were not. A gentler dog, a dog more devoted to his ideals of kindness and fairness would have acted differently. A fiercer dog would have acted differently too. What choices does Buck make, and how inevitable was “the call of the wild” given his circumstances? What choices would you make? Do not watch it. We do NOT recommend the Disney movie The Call of the Wild. The Disneyfied Buck stays civilized while the wild wolves remain a romantic mascot. The movie turns Jack London’s warning on its head, and shows strength without fierceness, fighting without brutality, and killing without psychological consequence. What parents should know. The Call of the Wild introduces nature red in tooth and claw. Jack London describes many dog fights in detail. Men kill dogs and dogs kill men. This book is not appropriate for younger or sensitive children.</image:caption>

It characterizes everyone by race, sex, sexual orientation, disabilities etc. Personality, character, or values are completely omitted from the list. People are classified as intersectional group members not individuals. Students are prompted to do “recipe writing” which is a cute phrase for making an identity chart. <image:title>Sharon K-8 ELA & SS - CRT or Civics?</image:title>
<image:caption>The 8th grade Civics curriculum (mandatory for all 8th graders) begins with the statement “to ground the development of authentic and informed civic action, the course begins with an identity unit.” According to the curriculum, the only “authentic and informed” civic action is based on your identity. Your identity is basically the CRT definition of raceme ethnicity, culture, religion, education, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, etc. Students learn to see other people first and foremost as members of some group. The stated objective of the unit is to teach students to evaluate WHAT people say based on WHO says it.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Middle School curriculum lists a lot of picture books for each unit. These books are used to teach moral lessons about identity and social justice. During the first month of school, I counted 5 picture books being read in-class, and not a single grade-level reading assignment (textbook, novel, short story, etc). Starting in mid-October, picture books are also used to teach note-taking and story structure. However, looking at the ELA curriculum for grades 6-8, it is clear that the main function of the picture books is to teach identity and social justice.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sharon Stakeholder PR - Memo on differential masking policy</image:title>
<image:caption>August 6, 2021 memo from MASS attorney Mike Long and Lesley Carey. …..Best practice in districts choosing to implement differentiated mask requirements based on voluntary vaccination status would be to implement a policy under which a staff member must produce a vaccination card if requesting an exemption. This practice would not likely be deemed to violate employees’ privacy or stigmatize employees with “unvaccinated” status, as it would be unknown to others whether a particular employee is masking due to being unvaccinated, or out of a desire to mask in addition to vaccinated status. Under a differentiated policy, it would be apparent to others that unmasked employees had provided evidence of “vaccinated” status, however. While vaccinated status may be stigmatizing in certain communities and parts of the country, it is unlikely to be stigmatizing in the vast majority of communities in Massachusetts, given the state’s high vaccination rates. Further, employees could elect to mask despite not being required to do so to avoid being transparent about their vaccinated status. At this writing, we are not aware of any law or requirement applicable in Massachusetts suggesting that a differentiated mask policy may not be applied to students as well as staff. We are currently of the opinion that, if handled correctly, with vaccination status and related documentation being safeguarded and narrowly produced, school committees choosing to do so can implement and carry out a differentiated mask policy without disclosing confidential medical information or otherwise infringing upon staff or student privacy. That being said, opting for either a universal masking policy or an entirely optional masking policy will be logistically easier to implement and enforce in comparison to a differentiated policy based on vaccination status. Also, new public health information documenting vaccinated individuals’ transmission of the Delta variant has raised concerns about differentiated mask policies. It should be considered, however, that the imposition of a universal mask mandate could potentially disincentivize vaccination, which public health authorities unanimously agree is the most effective line of defense against severe illness or death from COVID-19.</image:caption>

<image:caption>August 24, 2021 memo from MASS attorney Mike Long describing the discipline options available to superintendents for mask violations. This one is worth reading in full. Superintendent can claim that an unmasked student is not “in a condition to attend” school. In this case, the student can be forbidden to enter encouraged to either homeschool, or be given a “blizzard bag.” Section 37H 1/2 violation…unmasked students would have a substantial deterimental effect on the general welfare of the school. Section 37 H 3/4 violation….unmasked student is in violation of the handbook.</image:caption>

See page 2: Discussion regarding making a form for mask medical exemption - the consensus of the nurses were to not have a form to handle it as medical exemptions for other immunizations (letter from PCP) On page 2, the letter states that this decision was made at the Southeast Gathering on August 26th. Furthermore, the tone of the letter on page 5 makes it clear that the nurses were skeptical of the validity of these exemptions.
